Meatball sandwich

A meatball sandwich is a delicious and popular Italian-American dish consisting of meatballs (usually made from ground beef, pork, or a combination of both) that are seasoned with herbs and spices, then formed into balls and cooked. These meatballs are typically placed inside a sub-style sandwich roll or a baguette and topped with tomato sauce and melted cheese.

Here's a basic recipe for making a meatball sandwich:

Ingredients:

  • Meatballs (homemade or store-bought)
  • Sub-style sandwich rolls or baguettes
  • Tomato sauce (marinara sauce or your favorite tomato-based sauce)
  • Mozzarella cheese (or provolone, if preferred)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley (optional, for garnish)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

Prepare the Meatballs:

If you're making meatballs from scratch, mix ground meat with breadcrumbs, eggs, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into meatballs and cook them in a pan with a little olive oil until they're browned and cooked through.

Warm the Tomato Sauce:

Heat the tomato sauce in a separate saucepan on the stovetop until it's warmed through.

Slice the Rolls:

Slice the sandwich rolls or baguettes in half lengthwise. If you'd like, you can toast them in the oven or on a grill for a few minutes to give them a crunchy texture.

Assemble the Sandwiches:

Place a few meatballs on the bottom half of each roll. Spoon warm tomato sauce over the meatballs, and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. You can also sprinkle some grated Parmesan cheese on top for extra flavor.

Melt the Cheese:

Place the sandwiches (open-faced) on a baking sheet and broil them in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly, usually just a few minutes. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.

Garnish:

If desired, garnish your meatball sandwiches with fresh basil or parsley for a pop of color and freshness.

Serve:

Close the sandwiches with the top halves of the rolls, and serve hot. Meatball sandwiches are often served with a side of extra tomato sauce for dipping.

Enjoy your delicious meatball sandwich! You can customize it with additional toppings like sautéed onions and peppers or sliced olives to suit your taste preferences.
