Gumbo fried rice
Gumbo fried rice is a delicious fusion dish that combines the flavors of two popular Southern American dishes: gumbo and fried rice. Gumbo is a Creole and Cajun stew that typically contains a mixture of meat or seafood, vegetables, and a flavorful roux-based sauce, served over rice. Fried rice, on the other hand, is a Chinese-inspired dish made with cooked rice, vegetables, and various proteins, stir-fried together with seasonings.
To make gumbo fried rice, you can follow these general steps:
Ingredients:
- Cooked white or brown rice
- Gumbo ingredients (sausage, chicken, shrimp, okra, bell peppers, onions, celery, etc.)
- Gumbo seasoning (such as Creole seasoning or Cajun seasoning)
- Oil or butter for frying
- Gumbo roux (or use a store-bought roux)
- Chicken or vegetable broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Green onions and parsley for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare your gumbo ingredients: Cook your choice of proteins (sausage, chicken, shrimp) separately in a skillet until they are cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set them aside. If using okra, you can fry it until it's slightly crispy in the same skillet.
- In the same skillet, add oil or butter and sauté the bell peppers, onions, and celery until they are softened and aromatic.
- Add your choice of gumbo seasoning to the skillet, stirring to coat the vegetables with the spices.
- Incorporate the gumbo roux into the mixture. If you're using a store-bought roux, follow the package instructions. If making your own roux, combine equal parts oil and flour and cook it until it turns a deep brown color, stirring constantly to avoid burning.
- Gradually add chicken or vegetable broth to the roux mixture, stirring constantly to create a thick, flavorful sauce. Adjust the amount of broth to achieve your desired consistency.
- Return the cooked proteins to the skillet and stir them into the gumbo sauce. Allow everything to simmer for a few minutes to meld the flavors. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- In a separate large skillet or wok, heat some oil and add the cooked rice. Stir-fry the rice, breaking up any clumps, until it's heated through and starts to turn golden.
- Combine the gumbo sauce and protein mixture with the fried rice in the large skillet or wok. Stir-fry everything together until the flavors meld and the rice is well-coated with the sauce
- Garnish your gumbo fried rice with chopped green onions and parsley for added freshness and color.
Serve hot and enjoy your flavorful fusion of gumbo and fried rice!
